Misconceptions?

What does one think when he/she thinks about colorguard? The people who carry around the flags before football games and at ceremonies? Well, yes, that is correct but not the kind I'm talking about. The guard i'm referring to utilizes flag, rifle, music, and dance to produce a rhythmic piece and/or to tell a story. This is demonstrated best through winter guard--where The activity is brought indoors where the performers do a routine to a soundtrack as opposed to a marching band. Most people don't think about this being anything close to a sport, but it is an extremely physically demanding activity that is very competitive.

Hours of work spent on picking the right music, the right routine, flags, and practice go into the piece and creates a very rewarding experience, both on the competition floor and off. The friendships built with the people in your group and the connections made with other guards is unforgettable. A new group has just sprung up in the Huntington area, with the hopes of spreading awareness and support for the activity. It will take time, but I think that once people see how fun and active it is, the idea will grow.
